Two people in a city, not talking. Natural light, long takes, unfinished stories.

Two people at the next table, not ours. The scene is theirs; we only overhear. Cut on the waiter.

A café is a stage with the fourth wall already gone. Nobody performs. That's why it works.
The cut after

She looks past him. He looks at the glass. That's the whole relationship, one frame, no dialogue.

The singer is lit, the audience isn't. In the film I'd reverse it and never show the stage.

A night café cut into facets. The city does this to people too, if you wait long enough.

Sunday light, strangers at adjoining tables. Nothing happens, which is the plot.

A couple, side by side, not touching. Five hundred years and the blocking hasn't changed.
Two chairs

Who is holding whose hand? Hold on it. The audience will decide, and they'll be wrong, and that's fine.

Parting at the threshold. The door frame is the edit.

The city through the window, the room in shadow. The character is the one who isn't looking out.

An open window and no one at it. Wait eight seconds. Then someone.
35mm

A bench, a park, one person. Shoot it on the longest lens you own and don't move.

Melancholy, drawn. I would cast this face and give it nothing to say.

A piazza is for losing someone in. Wide shot, then the search, then don't find them.
Unfinished

Same square, forty years later, same loneliness. Cities are the only continuity we have.

The view the character sees every day and has stopped seeing. Begin the film there.
