Joints, handles, the underside of chairs. How things are held together.

How is the back joined to the seat? Hidden. 1880 hid everything. I'd rather see the joint.

A side chair, 1760. Seat height 450 mm. Still correct. Nothing about the body has changed.
Underneath

Same decade, different joiner. The splat is thinner. It won't last as long. It's prettier. Pick one.

A chair as a statement. Twice the material it needs, on purpose. Weight is a message.

1900: the lathe does the work the carver used to. Cheaper, not worse. Honest about the machine.

Bugatti's tea table. Vellum, copper, pewter. I don't like it. I keep looking at it. That's design.

A table from the 1600s: four legs, two stretchers. Nothing to remove. I measure it every time I visit.

Two states

A globe that opens into a work table. One object, two states. The best objects have two states.

The lamp is a plant: the shade is the flower, the stem carries the wire. Structure and metaphor agree. Rare.

Bugatti again. A cabinet that argues with you. How do you open it? You don't, it opens you.

Majorelle: the mahogany curves where the hand goes. Follow the hands and the form draws itself.

Boulle. Brass and tortoiseshell on the front, plain oak underneath. Always look underneath.

A drawer, alone, out of its cabinet. Dovetails you were never meant to see. The best part of the piece.

A bench is a chair that admits other people exist.

Bronze mirror, 1100s. The back is the design; the front is the function. They kept them separate. We should.

Dürer's tools on the floor: compass, plane, ladder, nails. A still life of making. The angel is bored because the work is done.
