Rooms without people. What's on the table tells you who left.

Drawing room, 1772. Count the chairs: more chairs than people. Someone is expected. Dress for the absent guest.
育ってA room for someone who never appears

Hammershøi's room. Grey walls, one door, nothing on the table. That's a character who left, and the set says so without her.

What's on the table
育ってA room for someone who never appears

Nantucket kitchen, 1872. Pine, iron, one window. Everything in it earns its place. Cut anything that doesn't.
雨宮 透 も保存しています

Chardin: copper, leeks, a cloth. Props that have been used. I'd age everything on the set to this.

Whistler's kitchen: a corridor of light to one figure. Walls dark, dress the far end, leave the middle alone.

Patterned wallpaper, patterned apron. The 1890s didn't fear pattern on pattern. Neither should the set.

A hearth, a chair, a shawl on the chair. Three props, whole life. That's the budget I want.
Decade by lamp

Bourgeois kitchen, 1854. Copper on the wall means money. Tin means not. Choose the metal, choose the class.

Restaurant kitchen, 1870s. Smoke-blackened ceiling. Paint the ceiling first; nobody looks up but everybody feels it.

Painter in his study, 1812. Look at what's behind him, not at him. The shelf is the biography.

Parlour, 1921. A lamp with a fringed shade. That single prop dates the scene to the year; one wrong lamp and you're in 1935.
Walls last

A pastry shop seen from the street. Shop windows are the cheapest set in the world: dress the glass, forget the room.

Butcher's, 1881. Tile, hook, scale. A shop is a system of three props repeated.

Magnasco: a tall room, small people. Scale is the drama. Build the ceiling higher than you can afford.
Used
育ってA room for someone who never appears

A holy family in a plain Dutch room, 1643. The set doesn't know it's a miracle. Keep it that way.

A basket as a prop drives the whole story. Build the basket first; build the city around the basket.
