Light studies. Where it comes from, what it skips, how little of it a face needs.

One candle, placed low. The face reads at T2, the background drops three stops. Nothing else is needed.

Honthorst hides the candle behind a hand. Same trick as a flag on a 300W: you see the light, never the source.
T2 at the face

La Tour: a single practical, warm, from below. Skin at key, everything else at minus three. The whole lesson.

Torchlight in a woodcut. Three tones are enough to describe a face. Remember that before adding a fourth lamp.

Chiaroscuro print: the mid-tone does the work. In film that's the fill you don't add.

Rembrandt lights at forty-five degrees from above. The far eye still catches. That's the rule, and it's a rule.

The chain catches first, then the cheekbone. Specular before diffuse; set the key by the highlight, not the skin.
Bounce, not fill

Hat as negative fill. The eyes live in the shadow and you still find them. Trust the shadow.

Window from the left, a white page as bounce. Rembrandt's own reflector, 1648.

Flinck after Rembrandt: the same key, less contrast. The student's lamp was bigger. Smaller is braver.

Caravaggio's hard top light. One open-face and a black wall. The black wall is the expensive part.

A boy, a glass, one window. The glass is the only highlight. Expose for the glass, let the boy fall.

Vouet softens the key with distance. A lamp far away is a softer lamp. Cheaper than diffusion.

Profile in chalk. The edge is the subject. Backlight it, then stop.

Lanterns in a crowd, many small sources. Expose for the lanterns and let the faces go. They'll come back in the grade.

Night procession by lantern, 1300s. Motivated light, moving source. They invented the Steadicam shot before the camera.
